Betty Martin, Director of the Cape Girardeau Public Library for 21 years, will retire next month.
Martin has been a professional librarian for 41 years. Martin received her Bachelor of Arts from
the University of Connecticut in 1975, and her Master of Science from Southern Connecticut
State College in 1977. She began her career as the children’s librarian at Wallingford Public
Library in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1977. In 1992 she took a position as Director of Children’s
Services at St Louis Public Library where she coordinated children’s services at multiple

Martin was hired as the Adult Services Coordinator of the Cape Girardeau Public Library in
August 1994, and served in that role until June 1997 where she stepped into the position of
Library Director. During her 21 year tenure as Library Director, Martin oversaw the construction
of the current library building that opened in 2009 featuring a distinctive Mississippi River theme
that has kept pace with the rapid changes in cutting edge library services provided to the
community. Jean Martin, User Services Supervisor, said that “One of Betty's many legacies was
her tireless work to provide the community with a true destination library. As she shepherded
this project from drawing board to reality, the community now benefits from an outstanding
facility that offers a wide range of creative programs and services.”

Martin’s community involvement includes membership in the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau,
where she served as president from 2011-2012 and received their Distinguished Service Award
in 2010. Martin has also served on the Board of Directors for the Community Caring Council and

“The library has benefited from Betty’s background as a former children’s librarian. She has
always been a champion of children’s programming, supporting our efforts to create a vibrant
and energetic library space that is conducive to hands-on learning,” said Sharon Anderson,
Youth Services Coordinator at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.
Amy Trueblood, President of the Library Board of Trustees, stated that “Betty has quietly made
an incredible impact on our library and our community. She's turned the library into a
destination, even for people outside our district, and she's enhanced services and available
materials while being fiscally conservative. The Board is grateful for her excellent, consistent

In retirement she plans to catch up on reading and to spend more time with her grandchildren.
Everyone is welcome to attend an open house thanking Martin for her years of dedicated
service on Friday, July 13 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Hirsch meeting rooms of the Cape
Girardeau Public Library.

An innovative program that teaches high school students entrepreneurship will debut in Cape Girardeau at Central High School this fall. The year-long class helps prepare students for success in the workplace and in life by teaching entrepreneurial and life skills, by equipping them with the values, vision and life skills to pursue their dreams.

“We are extremely excited to be bringing this program to Central High School,” said Dr. Tony Robinson, deputy superintendent of secondary education for Cape Girardeau Public Schools. “I’ve always thought this was a great model. It provides an incredible opportunity for our students to learn all the ins and outs of creating a business, so they can become self-sustaining entrepreneurs.”

The Youth Entrepreneurs program blends experiential learning with economic and entrepreneurial principles, instilling self-confidence as students experience real market scenarios and learn how to turn their idea into a viable business. In addition to in-classroom and experiential learning, students are paired with mentors – business volunteers from the local civic community – who help guide them in developing their business plan and provide additional advice throughout the year.

“Our goal is for each Youth Entrepreneurs student to seek the knowledge of a business owner, pursue education beyond high school, and become successful – in business and in life,” said Priscilla McInnes, area director for Youth Entrepreneurs. “We aim to remove barriers to opportunity and our curriculum reinforces essential values such as responsibility, knowledge-seeking and principled behavior. We very excited to bring the program to Central High School and look forward to launching it this fall.” Approximately 17 juniors will enroll in the class this fall, the first one in the Cape Girardeau area with Pam Pensel as the teacher. Pam will be attending a teacher conference in Wichita, Kan this July.
