KCGQ Evolves from “Real Rock” to “99X”

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO — October 6, 2026 — After more than two decades as “Real Rock,” KCGQ has entered a new era with the launch of 99X, bringing Southeast Missouri a fresh approach to rock radio while maintaining the artists and attitude that have defined the station for generations of listeners.

The “Real Rock” name and its version of rock have been part of KCGQ for more than 20 years. While that heritage remains an important part of the station, the move to 99X gives KCGQ the opportunity to evolve its sound and introduce a broader, more current mix of rock music.

99X – Modern Rock for Southeast Missouri blends many of the core artists KCGQ listeners already know and love, including Foo Fighters, Shinedown, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Weezer, Three Doors Down and Three Days Grace, with a wider range of contemporary rock from artists including Papa Roach, Greta Van Fleet, Beartooth, Autumn Kings, Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed and others shaping the sound of rock today.

“This isn’t about walking away from KCGQ’s rock heritage. It’s about building on it,” said Jack Swart, General Manager of River Radio in Cape Girardeau. “Real Rock served this station and its listeners for more than two decades. With 99X, we can keep the music that made KCGQ successful while opening the door to more of the artists and songs driving rock today. It gives the station a fresh identity and a sound we believe can carry KCGQ forward for years to come.”

The new 99X identity is designed to reflect a rock audience that has evolved along with the music. The station will continue to feature established rock favorites while creating more room for newer artists, emerging music and the current sounds shaping the format. The transition from Real Rock to 99X officially began October 2, 2026. KCGQ remains part of the River Radio group of stations serving Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri.
