13th Annual Zonta Women of Achievement Celebration & Luncheon

Plans are well underway for the 13th Annual Zonta Women of Achievement Celebration & Luncheon. This year’s event, which honors local professional women and serves as the Cape Girardeau Zonta Club’s largest fundraiser, will take place on Friday, November 17 at Ray’s Plaza Conference Center, 3257 William Street in Cape Girardeau.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $35.00 and can be purchased by calling (573) 576-6351 or sending an email to woa@capezonta.org. The event includes a sponsor expo which opens at 10:30 a.m. followed by the luncheon and program at 11:30 a.m.

One of this year’s honorees is Wendy Kurka Rust who has been chosen by the Club as the recipient of its 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award. Rust was chosen for her many years of dedicated service to the community and for her lasting legacy as an inspiration for future generations of women.

Also being honored this year is Mary Rhodes Russell who served as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri from July 2013 through June 2015 and who still sits as a judge on the Court.  Russell is the recipient of the Club’s 2017 Celebration Award.  This award is unique among the others to be presented because it does not always go to a local woman.  Rather, the Club selects someone who has achieved exceptional success in her field while upholding the ideals and missions of Zonta which seek to advance the status of women worldwide though service and advocacy.

Unlike the Lifetime Achievement and Celebration Award recipients, who are announced in advance, the recipient of the 2017 Zonta Woman of Achievement award will learn of her selection for the first time at the luncheon.

This year’s nominees for the Woman of Achievement Award include:

  • Liz Glastetter, Service Line Director of Maternal and Child Services St. Francis Healthcare System
  • Jessica Hill, Executive Director Safe House for Women
  • Kathy Mangles, Vice President of Finance & Administration at Southeast Missouri State University
  • Rekha Patterson Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Southeast Missouri State University
  • Gina Raffety, Publisher Cash-Book Journal
  • Kim Voelker, Vice President of Community Development Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Bridget Watson, middle school teacher at Oak Ridge

The generous support of corporate and individual sponsors enables Zonta to recognize these deserving women and provide funding to organizations that improve the lives of others locally and worldwide.  Several levels of sponsorship are available. More information about sponsorships can be found at www.capezonta.org.
