Read to Excel

Hello, Cape Chamber members!

I am working with United Way of Southeast Missouri to launch an extension of the literacy program Read to Succeed. This pilot program, Read to Excel, works with 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students at Franklin Elementary and Jefferson Elementary and with 5th and 6th grade students at Central Middle School, as we, with the help of ABC Today committees, identified as having the greatest need for literacy intervention.

If you have not heard about the work Read to Succeed and Read to Excel do, we work with students in Cape Girardeau Public Schools whose classroom teachers have identified as being about one grade level behind regarding reading. This amazing program is reliant on community members coming into the schools to work with struggling readers. For example, this week Read to Excel started working with CMS during their "Tiger Time" at the end of the school day from ~2:30-3:10PM, facilitating "Tiger Book Club" which is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The 5th grade students come to Tiger Book Club Monday and Thursday and the 6th grade students come to Tiger Book Club on Tuesday and Friday.

My intention with this communication is first & foremost to raise awareness about these programs by starting a conversation throughout our community about these amazing literacy programs fostered by United Way. I would also like to ask you to check out our social media page, perhaps sharing with members of the Cape Chamber who may not know about this program. It makes SUCH a difference for young readers.
