Health and Human Services Committee 2012 Chair, Jason Bandermann, Saint Francis Medical Center The Health & Human Services Committee is made up of chamber member volunteers who promote to the membership various activities and initiatives that promote overall wellness of the membership and the surrounding area. The committee oversees the following: Host WorkWell, which is a "train the trainer" series for chamber member businesses or organizations in establishing a worksite wellness program. Coordinates Shape Up Cape competition among area businesses. Promotes to the membership available wellness programs sponsored by health and wellness chamber member facilities.  Additionally the committee will be working in partnership with the Small Business Council in promoting wellness trainings to the membership.  Freedom from Smoking is one of the programs promoted by the committee. Advocates for additional recreational trails and bicycle lanes on major streets in the Cape Girardeau area. Join this committee.  HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES – 2012 Community Development Division Purpose:  Determine and affect health and human service issues important to the membership and the community. Goal:  Address the issues of wellness including those involving employers, employees, community awareness, and healthcare costs and financing. Objectives: Host the WorkWell training program for members and area businesses wishing to learn how to establish a wellness approach and program at their place of business. Work with area health providers to host wellness related trainings and promote them through www.capeareatraining.com. Sponsor, promote, and enhance the physical fitness program, Shape Up Cape! Promote existing smoking cessation programs to members and area businesses. Continue advocacy and promotion of more built environment that supports all forms of transportation and promotes a more active and healthier lifestyle in the Cape Girardeau area. Goal:  Ascertain health and human service issues important to the membership. Objectives: Utilize survey results and any other input solicitation methods and act on issues. Work closely with the Council of Chairmen to identify issues. Goal:  Partner with local agencies to positively affect social services within the area. Objectives: Develop a campaign to promote family-friendly and volunteerism driven workplaces.  Campaign to include criteria places of employment will need to achieve to utilize the branded concept/logo.  Work with community partners and assist them in needs assessment where deemed appropriate by the committee. Goal:  Enhance and support community cross-cultural understanding, human relations, and cooperation. Objectives: Work with Chamber staff to promote and offer training sessions for cultural sensitivity and understanding. HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES ANNUAL REPORT – 2011 Accomplishments Almost 250 participants and 54 teams competed in Shape Up Cape! The committee advocated and partnered on the Missouri Foundation for Health grant to support area wellness programs.  Grant was submitted as a partnership with Southeast Missouri State University, Saint Francis Medical Center, SoutheastHEALTH, the City of Cape Girardeau and Cape Girardeau Public Schools.  The committee hosted another cohort of eight companies of WorkWell Cape Girardeau in August 2011.  This “train the trainer” concept was developed for area businesses with the basic components for establishing a wellness at their place of business.  The committee promoted smoking cessation programs to the membership. The committee assisted the United Way in promoting volunteerism through the WorkWell.
